401 internal or external balance?

Hello all, I'm working on putting a 401 nailhead into a '56 Chevy. Fun project, using a Chevy 4-speed. Anyways, can anyone here tell me if this motor is internally or externally balanced? The engine that I got at a local yard didn't have the balancer or flyhweel/flexplate so I don't have much of a way of finding out for myself.

Thanks in advance!

External. New flywheels are available through TA Performance, Poston Enterprizes and J&C's Parts. Carmen at J&C's may also have a used original flywheel and balancer (716)693-4090.

Thanks again, Doc. We are using the bellhousing off of a dynaflow (modified, of course), in combination with an adapter plate that I made. The next step is to turn a piece that goes into the large hole in the back of the crank so I can put a Chevy pilot bushing in it. Should be fun!
