Newbie
Hello everyone, great to be here.

A friend is restoring his 1946 Buick Super convertible that was delivered new to India. We are trying to ascertain the original combinations, can someone please assist with decoding the VIN details?

14467716 (I assume commission number)

1946 MOD
STYLE No. 46-4567
BODY No. 2239
TRIM No. 65
PAINT No. 14 (I believe Sequoia cream)
TOP - B

Is it possible to learn more about the exact date of manufacture and dispatch, the dealer who ordered it etc? A birth certificate if you will.

Looking forward to hearing from you guys, and would especially appreciate references for the upholstery patterns and finishes as well.

Cheers
Karl

BODY No L 2239
TRIM No 65
PAINT No 14
TOP B ACC.

MOD. = Buick model number (not stamped) = 56C

BODY No L 2239
L = body built at Linden, NJ (shipped to Flint for final assembly)

Trim 65 = Bedford Cord and Red Leather, available on model 56C only

Paint code 14 = solid Sequoia Cream

Top B = this looks to be added later, the top code was rarely stamped in 1946, but the correct designations were:

1 = Black convertible top
2 = Tan convertible top

No records were kept for things like build date, ordering dealer, etc.

Thanks Sean, that was really helpful and really quick - appreciate it!

Would you be able to assist with reference images of the correct interior, including the door pad patterns? Are there suppliers who provide correct interior kits?

I have come across some images of this lovely 47 Roadmaster in what seems to be a similar combition - would this also be correct for our 46 Super?

Thanks so much, cheers.

Thanks for this - the car it seems was delivered new to the Maharaja of Bikaner, who had some very interesting GM products. It is presently being recommissioned, will share images once completed. Cheers.

New buick owner here. I have a tag I'd like to decode but don't know where you all did your decoding. Any links to helpful websites that can get me started on learning more about restoring this beauty would be helpful!IMG_20201023_141334490.jpgRoadster.jpg

For the serial number of the car (separate plate):
2 = assembly plant - Southgate, CA
4382263 = frame or serial number of the car (first '46 Southgate car was 4380001)

For the body data plate:
MODEL
blank - should be stamped 71 for Roadmaster 4-dr sedan

STYLE
46 = model year
4 = Buick
7 = Roadmaster series
69 = 4-dr sedan

BODY
C = Built in Southgate plant
176 = body serial number - 176th style 4769 built at Southgate

TRIM
46-92 = Grey Bedford Heather (cloth)

PAINT
46-13 = Lehigh Gray poly

This is a good site to ask questions about the car & restoration. There's plenty of interest in the straight 8s here.

Buick VIN decoder - Lookup and check Buick VIN number and get build sheet for free. Check Buick ... Every Buick car has a unique identifier code called a VIN. This number ... What is VIN? VIN is a Vehicle Identification Number; What is VIS?

Not for 1946. And no "build sheets"
VIN did not start until mid 1950's and were not standardised until 1981, with the 17 characters

In USA some states titled cars by the engine serial number and others by the frame/chassis serial number. Can be used as a defacto VIN with old cars.
