Gas Needle

I just added a 1984 Buick Riviera to my collection. The gas needle is on about half tank no matter how much gas is in it Is it the gauge or the sending unit in the tank or could it possibly be a bad ground?

I would start by checking the ground wire and the other wire, if that looks ok then start wrenching because the tank has to come out to check if the float is stuck.
and if that fails unbolt the dash because the gauge can get stuck too.

Gas guages are usually grounded through the sending unit resistor. If your guage is half way, it could be stuck, or the sending unit is stuck. You could ground the guage and if it works, it should move to full or empty. This would indicate your sending unit is faulty. If the quage does not move then the guage is faulty.
