Heater/AC Control Panel

I have a 1997 Buick Lesabre (Custom) and began experiencing problems with the heater/AC. Even in the off position, hot air blows out of the vents. When I hit the A/C button, I can tell the A/C compressor kicks on, but hot air continues to blow out of the vents.
I replaced the heater/AC control unit with a used one I purchased at a local junk yard. It help things a bit in that the hot air is no longer continuously blowing out of the vents. The levers controlling the air tmp don't seem to do anything (like before I replaced the unit). Hitting the A/C button turns the compressor on ( I know it's working because the pipe near condensor is realy cold), but hot air still blows out the vents.

Someone else suggested the problem might be heater control valve (connected to one of the two hoses that comes off of the heater core) under the hood might have gone bad.
Does this sound right? Any other suggestions if not? Thanks in advance.

Goes,
It sounds to me like the air diverter doors are not moving properly. You are probably going to have to get a service manual to see how it is supposed to work, then troubleshoot it from there.

Bill,

Thanks for the advice. Where can I find a service manual? I should have mentioned I had this
problem occur once before when the car was still under warranty. All they did was swap out
the hold temp control unit with a new one. I figured I'd do the same and the problem would be solved. I guess it's possible that the one I picked up at the bone yard is bad too. I going to
try getting another one just to rule this out. If it's still a problem I'll move in the direction
you're pointing me too. I take it there's no vacuum involved in moving these "doors" which
control where the air is coming from?

Thanks again,
