Run or not to Run

Hi Buick Gods
I recently purchase a 56 Buick that just had the carburetor rebuilt before I bought it. I drove it around for a few weeks and put it in the garage. After a couple of weeks of sitting in the garage, I went to start it and it will not stay running now. It will start for about 10- 15 seconds and die out. If I go to try to use the accelerator it will die out. Choke is fine, and the car does not flood. This car has an electric fuel pump so I took the fuel line off to see if I was getting gas. When I turn the car on I can here the electric fuel pump compressor turn on. There was no fuel coming out at this point, so I turned the engine over. It took a few seconds but the gas did start to leak out. Any Ideas of why the car will only run for a few seconds.

Hi Jack
You say that she is getting fuel and not flooding, so that leaves one of two areas to check. First if she stalls as soon as the accelerator is released you may have to adjust the fast idle cam. if she runs a bit on her own then stalls try adjusting the idle needle valves. Hope this helps some.

Hi Jack,

My guess. An electric fuel pump is a positive displacement type pump. If it turns then gas comes out. It runs at the set pressure of the pump or your regulated pressure. If you hear it running and no gas comes out then that's the problem. Could be a plugged inlet line or if the pump has run a long time without gas in it, then the rubber vanes will wear out creating a loss of pumping pressure. I think the pump or inlet line or filter in the tank is the problem.

I hope this helps,

Allen

Two things are Involved. Fuel and Spark. Are You getting the proper spark and is the timing within guidelines. Coil and Points O.K.? If that area checks out , You then move on to Fuel. It could be something simple like a filter. You could have some Bad Fuel. Old Fuel that hasn't been Stabalized or some water developed from condensation. The Carb has been Rebuilt, but the most common enemy is a Air Leak. Its a complicated system and you have to go through all the checks and balances to isolate and detect the Problem step by step. The Vacume advance and the dash pot also enter into the equasion. There could be acombination of multiple problems that you have to sort out with a check list.
I have a 56' also and I have had all sorts of Fuel problems Gas Tank, Sending unit , Fuel lines clogged and the filer clogged with all sorts of dirt, rust and foreign material.
I hpoe you are able to isolate and determine the problem quickly.
Let us know , how You make-out.
