ok I have all my engine numbers now, the long number matches the vin and that tells me that it's the original engine. The large number on the side of the block is: 1196914. I checked the charts and it's either a 364 a 401 or a 425. How can I tell?

Maveric, It would have to be a 401 or 425; the 364 was discontinued after 1961. The 401 and 425 are hard to tell apart from external signs. We have to get that stamped production code number from the block. It is stamped along the same area as the engine serial number, only upside down. For 1965 it will start with L, then another letter, then 3 numbers. That second letter tells the story on engine type. The three digits tell the engine production date.

The picture on the engine ID page on this site mentioned earlier shows how it looks on a 66. The stamped MT123 is the production code number for that example.
