Windshields

Has anyone been able to remove the windshield from a skylark convertible in one piece?
The frame around the glass in my car is all rusty and can't be cleaned with the glass in. I've talked to several auto glass installers and they say it's not possible without breaking it. I'd rather not spend more money than i have to obviously...
any tips???

There are a couple of ways to remove the windshield if you are careful. The most common way is with a piano wire. Once the stainless windshield moldings are removed and the interior moldings are taken off, you can gently feed the piano wire through the windshield sealant. Then wrap the ends of the wire around a piece of dowel on each end. With one person on each end of the wire, you can slice the sealant all the way around the windshield. Go slowly, and if you start to hear any grating, stop immediately and refeed the wire through an area that is farther away from the glass. This is a tedious process, but the windshield can be removed this way withour breaking if you have the patience. There is also a "hot wire" that is available that will melt it's way through the sealant, but this is an expensive tool and not all glass shops have it.
The other way that I have been sucessful removing windshielsd is to use a "Hot Knife" with an extended blade and slowly cut the windshield out from the inside. You can keep the hot knife close to the metal pinchweld and not harm the glass. Do the top and sides first, then use a long windshield knife for the bottom. You can heat up the long knife with a propane torch and do a few inches at a time. Again, with this method, be extremely careful, take your time, and stop if you are unsure or hear any grating sounds.
Good luck. Let me know how you make out.

Let's put it this way. If you can not afford a new windshield, then do NOT attempt to take it out. You MAY be successful, but then, what if you are not?

Windshields are funny animals. Sometimes, you can smack them with a hammer with no ill effect. Other days, if you sneeze on them, they crack. You could twist the glass as you are taking it out, or putting it in and it will crack. It is a game of russian roulette.

Hi Syndicated

How did you get on with your windshield removal in your skylark convertible ?

I'm planning on doing the same in my 2-door over Easter and am actually thinking about getting a mobile windscreen man to remove and install them when I'm done.
pelase let me know?

regards & thanks

Guys,

I just wanted to let you know I took my screens out over Easter to sort the window frames - and did they need some sorting!!

The windscreen guy came adn whipped them out in about 5 minutes with a special knife with a right angled blade that just cut through the sealant from the front.

HE also came back and put them in 8pm the evening before the car show! - and only charged me a verty small fee for his time.

I defintely recommend getting the special knife or getting a profesional who has one to do the job for you!.
