There are a couple of ways to remove the windshield if you are careful. The most common way is with a piano wire. Once the stainless windshield moldings are removed and the interior moldings are taken off, you can gently feed the piano wire through the windshield sealant. Then wrap the ends of the wire around a piece of dowel on each end. With one person on each end of the wire, you can slice the sealant all the way around the windshield. Go slowly, and if you start to hear any grating, stop immediately and refeed the wire through an area that is farther away from the glass. This is a tedious process, but the windshield can be removed this way withour breaking if you have the patience. There is also a "hot wire" that is available that will melt it's way through the sealant, but this is an expensive tool and not all glass shops have it.
The other way that I have been sucessful removing windshielsd is to use a "Hot Knife" with an extended blade and slowly cut the windshield out from the inside. You can keep the hot knife close to the metal pinchweld and not harm the glass. Do the top and sides first, then use a long windshield knife for the bottom. You can heat up the long knife with a propane torch and do a few inches at a time. Again, with this method, be extremely careful, take your time, and stop if you are unsure or hear any grating sounds.
Good luck. Let me know how you make out.
