263 Bell housing removal

I am trying to remove the bell housing from a '53 263 standard shift engine. I can't figure out how to get access to the two uppermost bolts. I've looked at the service manual on this site but its not clear to me how to get those two bolts out. It appears I need to get them from inside the bell housing. Do I have to pull the flywheel and clutch first? Any advice is appreciated.

Yes. Remove the clutch. Then remove the oil pan. Then remove the rear main bearing cap. Flywheel bolts can then be removed towards the engine. Turn engine until all bolts are removed. Once all bolts are removed, the flywheel can be removed. Be careful, the flywheel is heavy. NOW those top bolts can be removed.

👍🏼...and don't forget to mark the position of the Flywheel onto the crank..it match in 8 positions.. ;-)

Oh Boy! I was afraid of that. This engine is out of the car and in an engine cradle that supports the engine on the motor mounts and the two flanges at the rear of the bell housing. That and the structure of the cradle will make pan removal problematic. This is going to be fun. Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it.

You are welcome. Please do as Jenz states. If the flywheel is reinstalled and not clocked properly, your timing marks will be inaccurate.
