'53 Special Key Switch Removal

I just got a '53 45R out of the desert. It had been sitting there since 1969 and hadn't moved.

I want to get keys made for the ignition switch. I cant seem to get the front of the switch off to get it out of the dash. This front cover of the switch is chrome and has the Lock, On, and Off on it. There is one small hole in the front of it so I tried poking something in there like to release a catch to remove the fornt of the swith so it can go out the back of the dash.

Any help would be great!

Also looking for hood springs, a clock, and right fender trim.

Thanks,

Jeff

With the switch in the off position, poke the end of a paper clip into the hole and turn the switch counterclockwise. This will get the switch in the correct position for removal. Then you will have to pick the lock portion in order to extract the lock.
The easy way to rekey is to remove a door lock and have a new key made. The door locks and ignition lock used the same key. Only the trunk key was different.

Thanks for the info. I will need this when the car gets restored in the future. I was able to get a key made for the glove box door, and that key worked in the whole car! So only one key for the whole car. And when I got the truck opened it was full! I got an extra straight 8 head, rockers, pushrods, carburator, and the hood springs I was looking for! Overall quite a nice surprise. :)
