It will just stall out and go dead. Ran diagnostics it said code 17 crank signal shorted but key wasnt all the way on. then it only showed in historical codes. Does it possibly need fuel pump, relay??? Is this a common problem?

well OK your onboard diagnostics are trying to tell you something. find the crank sensor, and although it may be a little difficult, trace the wire back, it may very well be rubbed through and shorting somewhere.
