Cylinder head removal for a beginner

I am currently rebuilding a '66 Buick 340 for use in a '66 Special. The only thing the engine needs to run is to have its heads ported. Can someone explain to me how to remove the cylinder heads so i can take them to the machine shop? Im just a beginners so any tips and tricks are appreciated.

My 340

I too am a 66 Buick owner with a 340. When I took mine apart I kept the valves and entire train in order and the heads came off with a few taps of the hammer.

I have to tell anyone, my best and most helpful resource for engine work is from boxwrench. This is a dvd about engine rebuilding and it tells all.
Worth the few bucks and the fella who produced the set actually answers the phone when one calls him.

Thanks PatrickJ. I should probably check into that considering i have minimal knowledge and a lot of work to do. By the way, would you happen to know where i could find an undamaged front bumper and passenger front fender panel for the '66. I am having no luck and it will probably be pretty pricey to get the original fixed and rechromed.

No idea where to get body parts from. My bumper was messed up and I was amazed at how easy it was to bump the steel back to a decent shape. My right front fender needed some heat and bumping and it too came back.

If I do find a good parts source I will gladly post it.

Best of luck
