1950 Buick charging problem

The Buick was not charging. When I got it back from the shop the volt meter was reading neutral at idle and pegged full charge driving. I put the meter on it and found charging 6.4 V at idle and 8.5 at higher revs. Sure don't want to smoke the system. Reading some threads around and the consensus seams to be a polarizing issue. I'd appreciate clear instructions on polarizing or other thoughts on the problem. Thanks much - Rob

Those numbers sound normal to me, a 6.0V battery is doing well at 6.4V and 8.5 sounds like a good charge rate. None of the 6 volt systems charged at an idle.

Polarize the system is covered on page (269) 10-31, paragraph 20.
