1970 skylark custom 455 STAGE 1 ????

hi , I have just purchased a 1970 buick and it has a 455 and all the markings of a stage 1. Is it possible. has a 12 bolt posi ,chrome valve covers, sway bar, th400 trans and has GM 2 J 10 on passenger side head and GM 2 H28 on drivers side besides the 1231786. The car has not been moved in 17 years until I trailored it home . Is there any chance this could have been built from the factory????thanks

you'll want to find the two digit engine code stamping of "SS".

if you come up with the "SS" code you'll also want to find the EIN ( Engine Identification Number ) and match it's last seven digits to the last seven digits of the car. this will verify that the block is original to the car and hasn't been swapped out over the last 40 years.

if you can find a build sheet that might also list the option code for the stage engine.

I'm willing to bet that the rearend and chrome valvecovers were added later. As far as I know these only came from the factory with a 10-bolt (which is plenty strong, don't worry about it), and I don't think the factory ever made Chrome valvecovers.

I think the GS Stg1's got chrome valve covers. Also, VIN code seventh character must be H to denote Flint plant where all Stg1's were built. ie. 446370H
