English newbie with straight 8 overheating issues

Windows is known to have problems with long term installations. you get issues with re-installing / de-installing / updating / patching leaving all kinds of cruft and orphan processes. and then you've got the possibility of trojans and viruses infiltrating through IE.

total disk backup, format and clean install of the operating system will typically restore your computer to it's original functionality and speed. any decent comp tech should be able to do that in < 4 hours ... and half of that time will be spent twiddling his thumbs waiting on the computer.

so, say a 100 bucks and your computer should act like it did when it was brand new.

i'm running PaleMoon ( Mozilla knockoff ) for a browser, Chrome ( Google ) and Brave ( Chrome knockoff ) are also supposed to be good. all are free. PaleMoon / Mozilla are pretty painless installs, although i certainly wouldn't try to download them over a 56k connection. i haven't tried the others but would expect the same from them.

Bob, I am under the impression that my pc functionality has not changed but that the websites have. They are requiring more and more of the systems they interact with. Web pages used to be quick loading with minimal data traffic, now webpages are loaded with more and more data because they want to take advantage of the latest technological capabilities of the devices that are connecting to their site. I am simply getting left behind. Alot of the websites show me a pop-up stating that IE8 is no longer supported, and MS is no longer supporting XP. That means I can't load a newer browser because it is not compatible with the obsolete XP operating system. Added to that, the slow data rate of dial-up is being rejected more and more and it simply times out, that takes some traffic load off the servers. I suspect some sites check that first and simply reject the connection.
I am not an IP specialist so there is some speculation in these statements. I don't download updates, haven't since day one. Now there are no updates for XP if I wanted to update. My system has not changed. John

Enough said, now back to Straight 8 overheating thread.

Success !

Ok, so I had the rad rebuilt - could only find a modern style core without spending an absolute fortune but it doesn't really notice. Cost was £300 ($360 at the current crap exchange rate!)

End result is the car now circulates water and seems to run fine which is great news as I was fed up of going around in circles. Still no working temp gauge but will sort that in time.

Thanks for all the advice, now I'll start a new thread about my 1956 Special Riviera - oh the fun never ends !!
