Hei conversion on 1966 buick Electra HELP!

What makes things more complicated on the 66, is that the resistance wire is run on the interior side of the firewall. Later cars had the resistance wire in the engine compartment, and it was easy to remove the whole wire and replace it with plain 12-14 ga wire.

All is definitely wired correctly after intense checking and testing, but the previous owner has the yellow wire from the starter wrapped up and not attached. It always started right up, ut noticed after Larry mentioned the yellow to R terminal, i checked and seems to e attached. Should i worry about attaching?

PS, my B's aren't working on my keyboard. Just noticed, lol

Thanks Tom! It turned out that the ignition coil was damaged within the HEI. I asked prior when sorting out the ignition part, and learned the brown/white wire connected to brown wire was the res. wire within the panel attached to the start position, yet originally i thought it was a white braided wire connected to the on position with pink. noone has been ale to inform me what that is and have truly been through every part of the manual and manuals of other models. The only thing I can find is from another post stating it was the res. wire. Anyone that could help me, please! This is driving me mad, lol!

You have two choices, one, replace the resistance wire with 12-14 gauge wire, or run a new wire that has full battery voltage in RUN and CRANK. Tom described how to do that with a relay. If you know how to use a multi-meter, you can identify the resistance wire. You can also use the meter to verify you have full battery voltage in RUN and CRANK.

Yes, that what i tried to explain earlier, and did that with the resistance wire(brown/white striped). No one could tell me what the white raided wire was that is connected to the pink in ignition switch. I have read and read every post and every page of the manual and nothing. It may not even e for ignition. I just need help identifying it.

White Braided wire? I don't see that on the wiring diagram. Trace the wire and see where it goes. I'm thinking you have tried to start the engine and it doesn't run?

I did prior and found the coil was no good on the HEI, so I ordered a new one considering the other was used. I havent tried starting yet because I wanted to see what this wire was all about. In other models of buick, i found it was the resistance wire posted in the threads here, but yes, nowhere on the 66 electra

Im getting ready to check and see if the wire might be to the antenna because it suddenly stopped working. Hopefully, thats it.

With a multi meter and the instructions you all gave me. I know what you all are explaining with the wiring. I went through ut the diagrams and what everyone suggested to complete it as correct as I understood. I do appreciate your help.

I don't remember giving you any instructions on testing HEI coils. I hope you didn't replace a good part.

I'm sorry if I'm confusing that's just me lol! No it's just from the threads on here and from other threads elsewhere, plus a hell of a lot of how to YouTube videos. But it's a good thing I didn't fire it up yet because on another thread I was asking about this white wire and somebody finally found out that there's two resistance wires in the panel one's for the generator light and the actual one for the ignition is the one I'm talking about so all settled and hopefully I can get this going. As always you guys been great!

Not only was the resistence wire spec'd was white BUT also spec'd as pink or turned pink over time. Inside the vehicle I'm sure it would have remained white as it only seems to turn a "pinkish" color when subjected to the constant heating & cooling cycles under the hood.

You guys are awesome and appreciate to no extent the help! I got to the point where all is hooked up properly, but left to go south for vacation, so didnt have the chance to fully finish. I cranked it once and fired, yet ran very rough, which i contributed to the vacuum advance needing adjusted. When i returned, i started the process and before i go too far, wanted to see if i should. I put a little fuel down her throat and cranked with it firing. It still ran rough, but also spit some fuel back out, so i shut it off and came here just in case it was something more severe........ Can anyone give me an idea if this is normal? Thanks!

I will be donating for your time:_)
