Help Identifying 66 Riviera Engine

Did 1966 Riviera's come from the factory with different size engines? My owners manual lists only the 425 cid Wildcat 465 engine.

The reason I ask is that after checking my engine code against the codes listed in this site it appears that there is a 401 nailhead in my car.

MT 270 is stamped on the block (unless I was mistaken). Next to that is a symbol that looks like a small case b; next is H; next is the same symbol only upside down followed by 27370.

It appears that this is the original factory engine as my vin number is 49876H92730 in which the last 5 digits correspond with the engine id.

Any help would be appreciated as I need to do some engine maintenance etc. and need to know what parts to look for.

Thanks in advance,

Clark

Clark-I read years ago that a $170 credit was offered for taking the 401 over the 425. I've never seen one, but sounds like what you have. The 425 was painted red in '66-what color is yours? Dan Mpls. Mn.

Hi Dan,

The engine color is red. It's definately a 401 after checking the numbers stamped on the engine. It's the original engine as the numbers on the block match my vin.

Do you have any information on this option? How many were sold this way?

Thanks,

Clark
