nailhead/tranny

i'm confused.......just found a 65 401, engine code is LT, however, the engine is less the tranny. the nice folks at the junk yard said that they have alot of the sp400's, but they are only "rebuilders" whatever that means. the first question is will any sp400 bolt to the 65 401, as long as it came from a 65 or 66 nailhead?
second question.....is there anyone out there that would take a tranny out of a junk car and put it in their project car without rebuilding it? and is there a switch IN THE CAR that changes the pitch in the converter?
.....................thanks, paul

The 64 trans did not have a switch pitch ,so you will want the 65-66 tranny. They had a switch that hooked to the carb ,and also a switch that was on the accelerator rod. Theis switch put the trans in high stall at idle so the car did not creep at idle

i think what they mean by "rebuilders" is that they need to be rebuilt. they don't know the condition of the trans and what has happened to it. it would be best for you to rebuild, it could have been outside in the rain, burned all the clutches, you don't know. it would be a waste to put it in and not have it work.

I shoved an '87 TH 7004-R into my work car, no rebuild. A year later it still gets me to work. It all depends on your relationship with the yard, and for insurance, PULL THE PAN and look.

Where are you, I'd love to have a few SP 400's in my garage.

There is a guy selling NEW electronic SP controllers. They replace the simple throttle switch GM installed. These things are MUCH nicer, and provide the option of full manual control, along with engine vacuum operated "kick down" of the torque converter, and a "timed" operation for drag use.

i was going to rebuild a sp th400, then maybe a th400, and now i'm looking at a chevy 700r-4 or 4-r, whatever.....it has its own overdrive, 4 speeds and is a good tranny and plentyful in the junk yards.
and it will bolt up to the 65 401!

oh...and i am here in phoenix, there are alot of nailhead stuff here.

There is NO overdrive trans that will bolt directly up to a 401. There is talk of an adapter being built, but I do not believe one is available yet.

If anyone wants a couple of ST300 nailhead trannies from '65-'66 Gran Sport Skylarks I have them, FREE. Email me buickfam@aol.com
