Swapping Dynaflop for 700R4

Ok Buick gods- I've decided to lose the Dynaflow in our 55' Super & go to the 700R4 & Chevrolet rear end - open driveline arrangement. The stock Buick differential measures approx. 54-1/2" from backing plate to backing plate. Does anyone know what Chevrolet models / years are the choice for this swap? I looked at a diff from a 66' Impala & it measured about 58"- too wide. I know this has been done a million times & figured I ask instead of hunt & measure 200 rear ends before finding the right one.

As always- thanks in advance guys! Jon.

Try using a rear end out of a 1963 - 1965 Buick Riviera. I've seen it done before and you still keep your 5 on 5" wheel patern.

48 buick rear end

hey Im also on the quest for that answer mine is a 48 super 2 door sedanette what is the length drum to drum I dont think backing plate to backing plate matters at least thats what a expert told me my friend is giving me a 72 nova rear end I havent meared that yet:waving:

1962 and later Buicks used an open driveline and the center section will bolt into the 1955 Buick housing. You will need to re-cut the splines for the axles but it makes it easy to change over as the only modification is to build or install a 4 link system.

rear end

jim thanx for the reply, what model and up to what year this info is going to be very helpful for every one

57 two door hard top

Bebop, what did you swap out(put in place of what you removed) on your 57 rear end? I still have an all stock 57 Buick but may change over to something differant someday and would like to get all the info I can before I start making the switch, thanks in advance for any info you have...
