'53 Engine and Trans Removal Question

We're going to yank the straight eight and dynaflow out of our '53 Buick for a quick overhaul. Can we pull the engine out first? If we do, can we get the transmission out without having to move the rear diff back? Any pointers for this project? Where is the best place to get a rebuild kit for the trans?

Straight Eight engine removal

Hello,
It's been a while since I've done these but there is a procedure in the Buick manual that outlines how to do it. Believe it or not, the specified method is to remove the valve cover and lift from the rocker arm shaft. If you're just taking out the engine then lift from the middle. If you're taking the transmission with it you hook it back towards the firewall. The idea is to be able to find a balance point to allow you to lift the engine easily. In any event, this allows you to remove the engine and transmission without moving the rear end back.
As for rebuilding the transmission, I always check local shops first. If they actually rebuild transmissions then they can probably do the Dynaflow. However, many of the chain shops simply replace transmissions. They won't be able to help you.
Best of luck,

Yes, you can pull the engine first. Make sure you put a support under the transmission. I've used a 2"x4" and chains. I did it this way, rather than a jack under the tranny, as I rolled the car back as the engine came out.

In the mid 80s I got dynaflo parts from "Fatsco transmission parts", they still have a web site. good luck.

apbmalibu, I'm getting ready to remove a straight 8 from a '52 Buick parts car. How did you remove yours? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

J, he was last on here 14 years ago.

However one decides to remove the engine, with or without the transmission, get the radiator out of the way. I have never removed one with Dynaflow. I unbolt the transmission on a standard transmission and leave it in place. Either way works.
