Picked up this little gem for CHEAP with LOW miles, doesn't run all that bad. It's been garaged for over a decade (tires are in their teen years). Has 4Tech under hood, had a knock and metal in the oil pan, looked like rod bearings. Replaced rod and main bearings, a few of them had witness marks but nothing that would cause the amount of metal I found. I changed the oil a couple of times and still have the noise, although it is much quieter now.

I'm thinking the crank is egged out, maybe? As far as the metal, where is it coming from? Is it possible for a larger amount of metal to generate while appearing to have little to no wear?

Any advice appreciated!

I am not familiar with the "4Tech" engine, what is the displacement?

As for the metal, also consider cam bearings if not overhead cam and balance shaft bearings if so equipped. Many 4 cylinder engines had counterbalance shafts to reduce felt vibration in the engine. I know of one 4 cyl engine that failed the balance shaft bearings. It had a deep rumbling sort of knock instead of a single distinct knock. It ran but got increasingly louder. Get a book that covers your particular car and engine. Do some research toward those possibilities.
