Jim, the first 3800 engines came out on the 88 Park Avenue/Electras and some LeSabres. There were 88 LeSabres still being built with the 3.8 as well. Another forum reader came across two 88 LeSabres with the different engines and wanted to swap engines. I told him, after reviewing the 88 shop manual, that the mechanical part of the swap looks like it can be done without too many headaches. The electronics part looks like there are some major hassles. He never did reply back as to whether his project got under way.

Even if all the 3800 parts are brought over from the donor car, splicing them into the 3.8 car wiring will be difficult. Your car should be close to the 88 Park Avenue. Moving into the later years of the 3800 engines should increase the difficulty of the swap. Unless somebody offers up first hand experience on doing this swap, caution is advised. It would be a good idea to go over the 87 shop manual and parts list with the same books for the year of the donor car. I just received in a bunch of service and parts bulletins for late 80s Buicks; will check to see if there were any GM Goodwrench engines that fit in both the 3.8 and 3800 from around that time. Good luck.

still confused. the 88 motor does not have the siamesed intake that the 87 has and alot of other stuff is confusing us very well. like the 4 wire crank triger on the 88. the 87 is a 3wire triger this is why help is needed. Thanks for the reply
Jim
