Help With Riviera Emblem Install

Hello,
I would like help/advice/tips on installing my Riviera emblem. I purchased an aftermarket emblem and some barrel nuts (1/8 stud, .040-.045 panel). Not sure the best way to install it. Perhaps there is another way than the barrel nuts. Don't want to try and access behind fender. This vehicle will be repainted in the distant future but want it to look okay for now. Please see pics. Look forward to any replies. Thanks20220428_063048.jpg20220428_063424.jpg

They attach with the nuts on the inside of the front fender. Remove the three screws that hold on the filler piece by the hinges. IF your hands are small enough there should be enough room to get them installed.
Another option is to remove the bolts that hold the fender on the bottom & pull it out some to try & give more room.

Lou,

I said to attach with the nuts. Looking at the pic closer I see the nuts you are talking about now. IF I remember correctly the nuts were 5/16ths. quick nuts. Like a Sheetmetal screw only opposite.
Maybe someone could post a pic to show you what to look for.
The filler piece that's between the upper & lower hinges.
Again, someone could send a pic of what I'm talking about that would be helpful.

The barrel clips push into the mounting holes in the fender. Then the emblem pins push into the barrel clips. If everything is correct, it should hold the emblem securely, and you can carefully pry the emblem off when you get the car repainted.

I think the piece Tom is referring to is the Front Door Hinge Cover. Buick used them off and on through the years. Here is a thread on repairing those on the '68 Riviera. It disappeared from the Master Parts Book after the ‘68 models, making me think the '71 Riviera did not have this part (open door view attached).

The original flange type nuts have a hex head as noted. Here is a page from the GM Standard Parts Book showing different sizes. There will still be one or two there holding the broken monogram piece.

These nuts have always caused me loads of trouble. They typically make the nameplate a one-shot deal as far as ever being able to remove and reuse it. The nut threads the spear as it goes on. Just a little extra torque at the end as the nut seats will cause the nut to spin free and strip the thread at the bottom. Then it is very hard to get the nut to back off and retrace the thread. Just a little extra flick of the wrist will break the spear off as well. It might have a little better corrosion resistance compared to the barrel nut.

The barrel nut (or Push-in Nut as GM calls it) is probably the best way to go where the monogram has to be removed later. Hopefully the flange of the barrel nut is not thick enough to prevent good seating of the monogram against the fender.
