Is it necessary to put vaseline in the oil pump after removing timing cover?

We replaced the timing chain in the 69 skylark and the shop manual says to take the oil pump apart and pack it with vaseline. Is this a necessary step?

The purpose of packing the pump is to help it pull oil up from the sump faster. If your pump is in poor condition it could take a while to prime causing the engine to run for longer than necessary without oil.

You can prime the pump using a drill rather than just starting the motor being as you have already put it back together.

Thanks

Thanks for the info. Im thinking I might try a drill. Dont want to open up any more cans of worms.

on any rebuild, you should crank the engine over - NOT letting it start, until the oil pressure guage shows oil pressure starting to rise.

if all you've done was change timing gear/chain, the block should have plenty of oil in the passageways. I would still pull the coil wire and crank it, watching the oil pressure guage
