Tach check

On my 72 skylark custom 350cid I have a GS tach on the hood, At idle it shows 700-800rpm and crusing at 60 it shows 1800rpm. I am still getting used to the car so I don't want to hurt it. Pulling it in 1st gear and watching the tach I want to shift it into second when the tack hits 3500. It seems like it is reving a lot higher than that! The distributer has a electronic assembly in it, I wonder if it is throwing off the tach or am I just a puss. Anyone know how I can check it?

Just my thoughts, do you have a person who has older test equipment and you could hook up to a little handheld tach-dwell meter combination. It you knew the gear ratio of the rear end, the are many programs on the internet for determining your engine RPM. It takes exactly one minute to go one mike at 60 MPH. You could compare that to your tach reading on your hood.

tach check

I know the speedometer is correct, maybee i should buy a cheep tach at the local swap meet and hook it up to see if it matches, or try to get 5k out of it and see what happens.

Tach check / harmonic balancer

Went to drive the car last night, it was not running well, thought I would check the timing this morning. cleaned off the harmonic balancer and started car. I could not find the timing mark. adjusted distributor back and forth but never saw the mark. I think the outside of the balancer slipped on the rubber. So I adjusted the timing the best I could by ear and test drove it. I guess The tach is working correctly, I pulled a 4500 rpm shift on the tach. had no Idea the timing was that far off. Anyone know where to get a balancer for a 72 Buick 350 Hopeing that is my timing problem!
