So, I was finally able to time the car. Having done that, I prepared for a little test drive. I reved up the motor and bam! a loud rattle/bang and then the constant rattle/bang of something gone very, very wrong. I got out to see where the noise was coming from -- sounds like the driver's side of the engine -- and oil had sprayed out from under the oil cap on that side. The noise is constant and gets louder as you rev the engine. I didn't have time to take the rocker /valve cover off before it got dark, but I'm hoping the problem is just a stuck lifter or something -- not something worse like a busted rod (but the noise is fairly pronounced, so I'm fearing the worst).

Does this sound familiar to anyone of you folks? Have any ideas of places and things I need to begin checking?

I've been a soap opera unto myself this week.

Thanks for putting up with it.

Sounds bad to me!

I think we have an idea what your going to be doing for the next few weeks...

The oil blowing out the breather sounds bad to me, probably not a stuck lifter (but you can hope).

What turned out to be the problem with the timing?

As far as the timing goes -- after replacing the new bits with the old bits and it not making any difference, I fiddled around some more found one spot in the #1 wire (as close as I could get it to the dist. -- makes sense) where, if I held the pickup in just the right way (held me breath, said ten Hail Mary's and pointed my right toes toward Venus ascending from the west) it would trigger the light most of the time. This was enough to allow me to set the initial timing on the car. The battery voltage is very low now (after sitting for a few days) and barely cranks the car. I need to buy a DC ameter and follow Todd's advice about measuring possible battery drain.

Any ideas on this god-awful engine noise? You can tell me, I can take it.

I don't know, but the oil coming out the breather could indicate one of the pistons has a hole in it (broken), or is no longer going up and down...

By the sound of the noise any running of the engine could cause further failure so should be avoided. Sometimes when dealing with an early failure you can idle the engine and ground out spark plug leads to isolate which cylinder is banging. When you ground the offending cylinder, the "tick" will go away or at least sound different.

After starting the car again today, here's a better description of the noise....at idle the only noise seems be something like extra noisy valves or lifters -- loud ticking (they were not this noisey previously). When the engine is reved, there is a clang/bang/thump and what sounds like a simulatneous pop from the carburetor. The sound only occurs when the engine is reved and the more it's reved the louder and more frequent the noise. I've never heard a stuck or broken piston before, but this is what I imagine it sounding like.

I'm a little out of my league on this one, and don't have all of the proper equipment necessary to rip the engine apart. So it looks like I might have to tow the car someplace to have it looked at.

Anyone else hazard a guess?

sounds like a bent push rod remove the valve cover and check it out

Hello all,
I'm afraid Gennaro raises a good point. I met this awful situation one year ago and effectively, one of my push rod was bented.

There was one of my valve that was stuck in the cylinder head by a mix of bad oils heated. The hyd lifter bented the push rod and either at cranking or idle, there was a metallic 'click' noise in the engine.

You'll see that if you remove the valve cover. Hope it's not the case for you because i had to remove the cylinder head and clean all the stuff.
