Hey folks.
My 70 Skylark 350 engine had been purring since the day I bought her about 3 mos ago.
This morning when I started it up, there was a LOUD clicking coming from what I fear is the inside of the engine. It's hard to pin down exactly where it's coming from cause it's pretty loud. The clicking increases/decreases per gas pedal pressure. It has plenty of brand new 10-30. There was what seemed like a slight exhaust leak (flutter) when I would accelerate, but it was barely noticeable. Now I am am curious if these sounds are somehow related.
Am I looking at a valve or lifter job or does this sound more serious?

Ross,
Many guys have been "fooled" by an exhaust leak...thinking that it was a lifter etc. It is basically impossible for anyone here to do anything other than guess, because we cannot actually hear the noise. I suggest finding someone local, who can actually listen to it, to give you a second opinion.

it could be your lifters but i have the same car and i was having a ticking problem it ended up being my oil pump i rebuilt it and it road fine for a good minute now i have changed the cam, lifters, heads reworked, aluminum intake, TA headers, postons double roller timing chain runs pretty good. just my $0.02

Sea Foam. An Old Timer down street recommended the engine additive and it worked within 10 miles. I am usually skeptical of "gimmicks", but this stuff really worked. Runs better than ever.

Exhaust noises usually sound like exhaust and do usually increase in time. Try using what is called valve medic sold in pepboys trac auto or autozone. costs about 3.00 dollars cheapest fix. if the noise quiets after about 5 miles then rebuild your oil pump for permenent fix. You can also take the car to a muffler shop to listen for exhaust and they wont charge to diagnose the exhaust.
