Am I correct that the firing order is 1 6 2 5 8 3 7 4?

Using the vac advance can as a reference, where is the number 1 position on the distributor cap?

May or may not be right, but I think the firing order may be 18258374. >>>>16258374 corrected as per comments below

And I found in the 1942 manual, in the electrical system, a drawing which I extracted the following image. (original image on page 12-54)

...a little typo there - you have no. 8 firing twice, and no. 6 not firing at all. I suspect that would result in a rough idle. (Elbow nudge, wink) 16258374 should do it. The diagram shows the vacuum advance mounted at cylinders 5 and 8, and rotation of rotor as counterclockwise. All the best as you get it sorted out.
