39 Flywheel Housing

Hello everyone. I have a question regarding the flywheel housing for a '39 series40. One the face of the housing where the transmission bolts on, there are the 4 holes for the retaining bolts, and the large center opening for the transmission front shaft. So, that leaves us with one more hole, on the upper side near the left top that is for the first and reverse trans. shaft to enter swhen you engage first gear. If anyone has one of these apart, I would appreciate knowing the depth of this hole for the trans. shift shaft to enter. You can see, I do not have mine apart now, but am looking forward to some changes.
Any help would be appreciAted.

The answer to the above question is that the '39 series 40 flywheel housing has a very shallow hole, probably not more than 1/8 in., where the first and reverse rail can enter in first gear. All later models have a much deeper hole. Mine was enlarged to allow a '41 trans. to fit the housing. You need to deepen the hole by at least 3/8 in for the later trans.
