54 buick special vacuum fuel pump

I just bought a new rebuilt vacuum pump for my 54 Buick Special and the pump shaft won't fit into engine properly so I can't bolt it on the engine, any help would be appreciated
 
tseshaht, Could you be more specific regarding the shaft fitting. Is the cam lobe down?
