How should these mirrors be mounted on a '52?

Looking at mirrors like these - how (and where!) are these attached to the car? It looks like they are shipped with machine screws, but there's nothing on my car (currently no external mirrors) to accept machine screws.

Wondering - should there be mounting "plates" (much like there are for later mirrors) that you bolt onto the car, and these mirrors just screw to those "plates"? Doesn't look like that's the case, here, but I'm really uncertain.

Also - Does anyone have pictures (or instructions?) for WHERE to mount OEM-style mirrors? If I'm going to blow holes in what is currently perfectly good metal, I want to make *darned* sure I'm doing it right!

bittmann,

1st. off have someone hold/position the mirrors while you are sitting in the vehicle for the best spot/locations.
Left & right will more than likely be in different positions for the best views.
Personably I don't like mounting the mirrors with sheet metal screws, especially the left as the opening & closing of the doors they will come loose.
I would put at least another piece of sheet metal under the original door metal.
Just my thoughts.

Someone installed this type of mirror on my roadmaster many years ago. They seem to work fine, thankfully they were thoughtful enough to put felt lining between the clamp and the edge of the door chrome. They do interfere with the vent window opening all the way but only a little bit.

Yes! That's very helpful. Makes sense.

Like the way those look, too.

Do you know how the mirrors are fastened to the car? Are they just self-tapped?

I agree with Tom to adding a plate behind it instead of just relying with the threads of the sheetmetal. I'd also consider riv-nuts instead of the plate if access is a problem.
