can anyone help. the cruiser is down. i still need to know what engine the 67 lesabre has, see previous post. took it out today on a small cruise and had a problem. got into it getting on the hwy and had a large backfire with lots of black smoke, slowed down and the was a ticking noise coming from the pass. side v/c, you could feel it and the engine had a miss. sounded like a lifter or broken rocker arm, and the oil light was flashing at idle. ate lunch and headed back home on the hwy, once up to hwy speed, noise went away and engine smoothed out, about a 30 mile drive home. got home and noise was gone. went to car wash to clean off after trip and while waiting to get in oil light came on solid. washed car and engine and was stuck there for a while until engine dried out enough to get home. oil light was off????? got home and let idle in drive way to dry out, no oil light. as the ignition dried it smoothed out. took around block and it ran great, no miss and no oil light till i came to a stop and then oil light flickered. reved up and went out and stayed out all the way back. shut off and checked oil and was full. started back up and oil light on solid, bring rpm's up and light goes out, but lots of clatter noise. no gauges only lights. could this have been a lifter that was making noise? why is the oil light on solid now? i am going to put a gauge on it tomorrow and verify the low oil pressure. if it is low, what do i do???? can the oil pump loose prime, could it be bad, could the oil pick-up be plugging up???? i bought this car last sunday from a freind, it has been sitting since 99', and only has 43K on it. i changed the oil on it monday after i bought it and used 10w30 and there has been no problems until today, put about 300 miles on it. please help i want to get it back on the road, the conv. is still a long way off.

Your doing the right thing checking the pressure with a guage should be the first step. Post the pressures when you get them.

well here is my pressures, 0, nothing. i removed the oil sending unit and installed a mechanical gauge and change the oil and filter. the oil was black and thick, i changed it last monday, and have driven it about 300 miles or less. it apeared that it was about a qt overfull, when i changed it last time i put in 5 qts. which i found on the dipstick it said 4 qts. fired it up and it would not bleed the oil line that i installed for the gauge. if i gave it a little gas the oil in the line would move, but never made it more than half way. the noise that it is making sounds like lifters(makes since with no oil pressure).i had filled the filter about 1/2 way before i put it on, when i removed it was about the same, but the oil was foamy. pulled the dipstick and the oil in the crankcase was also???? removed the oil pump housing and gears, all looked ok, checked pressure relief valve and spring and all looked ok. felt like the drive gear was mating w/ the dist. (could not rotate gear with it all the way up in the cover). blew comp. air through all passages the best i could, and packed the pump with lubriplate and put all back together. restarted and same thing, no oil pressure. got fed up and quite for the day. any suggestions? could i be using the wrong oil filter? could the pick up be plugged up, it did sit for 3 years? does any one know if the pan can be pulled in the car, looks like the engine will at least need to be pushed up off crossmember. any ideas before i yank the engine would be great. thanks

I think cleaning the screen is one of the first places to start. It is no doubt badly clogged with debris.

I would also change the oil every 3 or 4 hundred miles untill it cleans out. Be sure you pack that pump real good. I use a light wheel bearing grease and use more than necessary. Be sure the relief valve is free and not stuck open.

The engine should be a 340 in a '67 LeSabre. What oil filter are you using?

thanks for the engine identification. i belive it is a 340. what can anyone tell me about it? from what i found it appears to be the same block and bore as a 300, but with a longer stroke and diffferent heads, and intake, and was only made in 67-69, is this close? what other engine is it similair too, and what interchanges parts if any?

the first filter i bought was from carquest, and the second was from napa #1258, both stores told me that no matter what engine it had the filter is all the same for 67. is there a better filter to use??????

should i buy a new pick-up or try an clean the old one out??? and where could i get one? havn't really looked yet. thanks

You can probably clean the old pick up. A new one will be hard to get. It is just a wire screen.

I don't have a Napa cross reference, but, a an AC PF 24 or PF 30 will be correct. PF 24 is what came on them.

You should be able to pull the pan without lifting the engine. If you have to lift it, then it will only be a small amount. On a '67 the center link of the steering may need to be disconnected.

thanks for the info, oil pan was a breeze to remove, pick up screen was not clogged. found a peice of a pushrod in the bottom of the pan. pulled the valve covers and found the problem. the passenger front rocker arm was laying on the head, end of the rocker shaft broke off? spit the exhaust pushrod, and bent and broke the intake one. the front lifter was completly out of the lifter bore. i guess this is where my oil pressure was going. has anybody seen this before? both valves are free and the rockers appear to be ok, no galling. looks like i could just replace the pushrods and the rocker shaft? any suggestions???? also one other weird thing was that when i removed the intake, that cylinder intake port was full of oil??? any ideas? does anybody know where i can get rocker shafts? will 300 shafts work, i know where i might be able to get those off a parts motor.

well just to let eveybody know ordered all the parts from napa and they should all be here next week, so the cruiser should be up and running in no time, thanks for all the help.
