We've probably have all heard that this name came from the fact that the valves stand vertically in this engine. But, has anyone else heard this explaination?
I don't recall exactly were I read this, I think it was in an issue of the Riviera Owner's Assoc. newsletter the Riview.
The story was that after this engine was bored out to 401 there was no more room in the heads for larger valves.
Thus, when it increased to 425, Buick had to keep the vavles the same size as they were on the 401. They supposedly called it a nail valve because the valves really were too small for the displacement of the engine. I just threw this out for fun, Its a moot point. But, wondered if anyone else had heard this, or if there are any other versions of how it got it's name.
Urban Legends ya know.
