I can't help it, I have been drawn to the dark side
High tech coatings. These are from techline. This is my first experiment with coatings, and I am in a state of mind that they are good. I am sure there is lots of room for criticism, and I encourage it. These are Wiesco forged pistons going in a 455 for my car. I have used a flapper wheel to dull all ridges in the piston top.
All work is done with gloves to eliminate transfer of oils from hands to project.
In this photo, the pistons have been heated to 350+ to burn off oils. The ring grooves are then masked. The inside of the piston and the top is then burnished with aluminum oxide (or garnet) at 30-35lbs. pressure. You can see an old piston pin is used to protect the pin bosses. The pistons are then rinsed/washed with acetone as a final step before coating.
Here you can see the TLTD heat dispersant applied to the underside using a couple of old pins to protect the bosses.
And finally the CBX coating on top of the pistons.
Next comes curing in the oven, and then fitting them in the block
