Unidentified Engine

I am looking at an old build street rod, probably at least 20 years. The engine is a V6, reportedly a Buick 3.8. The distributor is on the left front. It has a 2 bbl carb. I found a tag on the left rear side of the block with these numbers: HU 15 S and below that W49931. I would like to know exactly what type of engine this is. The seller did not build the vehicle and has no idea, says he was told the engine was a 3.8 Turbo with the turbo removed and replace with the intake and carb.

Ford Windsor designs have the distro at the front drivers side, but the shaft is verticle.

Caddy distros are front drivers side angled like Buick engines ... but i don't know of any v6 variations of the classic Cad v8 families.

all the other GM division v8s had the distro at the back and any 90* v6 derived from them ( Chevy 3.3L and 4.3L being common ) would likewise have the distro at the back.

on the other hand, i'm not sure there were any Buick 2v turbo v6 engines. they all seem to be either 4v or SFI.

might just have been a vanilla 2v 231ci that somebody got a little frisky with the description.

Bob,

You are probably right, after all, I am dealing with a used car salesman with a white belt and white patent leather shoes :D

HU = Buick/Jeep 225 Marine V6....mid to late '60s

Thanks partsman. This engine does have a flame arrestor type air cleaner on it. I had suspected that it might be a marine engine. Well, that is not necessarily a bad thing. Marine engines are engineered to operate at higher sustained RPM for longer periods of time than automotive engines. This engine is in an 31 A Model PU, I doubt that I would be running at high RPM's for any length of time. So, unless it is worn out now, it should last a long time.
