It was used to have Buick? race engine in Buick cars.
no, it wasn't. it was done because the design of Chevy factory combustion chambers sucked while the Buick chambers were at the cutting edge of the technology of the day.
today's Vortec heads are marginally better than the Buick design and are backwards compatible with all of the standard Chevy style manifolds and headers which is why noone uses the "Buick" branded heads any more.

Smokey did all the R and D on the stage II Buick v-6 like it says in the Baker article and he was a big fan of the small block chevy. At least it says so in his book. He knew it was a better head than any of the existing designs so it was a natural to adapt it to the chevy. Hell he did most of the chevy R and D that everyone takes for granted. I'm betting that he was the first to suggest this. I remember when these heads were around. They made big power. The reason nobody uses them anymore is because they were basically too good at the time. NASCAR wouldn't sanction them for Winston Cup use because they were always trying to keep things even. As such they didn't get the aftermarket support they deserved because they weren't legal for stock car use. Several drag racers used them, some very effectively, but only the Fuel classes have the bucks to run an effective R and D program and they all use hemi's. They were great heads but without big time racer support they were always low production and as such they and the parts were expensive as hell. After awhile Buick dropped the Stage II program and racing in general and technology marched on to surpass the Buick head design albeit incorporating many of the things learned from them. Thus it was all dressed up with no place to go. The Vortech engine from chevy is a standard production engine and had no bearing on why this head didn't make it. Apples to oranges. Some cam company's still have roller blanks and the valvetrain specialists probably still have the rockers if you find a set of these heads so you can still get parts. I believe Dart no longer makes these.
