HELP! Driveshaft removal.

Buick_56

Newbie
I finally got my 56 Buick running and then it starts leaking from the front transmission seal. The problem is that I don't know how to remove the driveshaft because it's got an enclosed driveshaft! I've never worked on one before. Do I have to take the rearend out as well? I would really appreciate the help, because the car is registered but I can't drive it to get inspected!

After a car sits the trans. seals usually get hard from age. For the interium, so you can get the car inspected, put in a quart of dot 3 brake fluid. Basically all most sealers are is some kind of brake fluid as it's main ingredient. Let the car warm up then add & then drive. If it doesn't stop the leak, it will usually slow it down enough so you can take proper corrective measures while not under pressure. Then we can walk you through rear diff. movement, not removal. Give it a shot, what ya' got too lose????

Yeah, someone told me I could add a tea spoon of amonia to swell up those seals again, but I think I'll try the brake fluid first. It just sounds more logical. Thanks Tim!

Get yourself a Service Manual. Kanter sells 'em, as does CARS Inc. They tell you how to remove EVERYTHING. The one I got for my '53 has been very helpful.

Hi
I had my transmission rebuilt in my 56. The local shop just pulled the rearend back enough to get the thing loose. I did not see them do it. They had me wait untill there dads were back from vacation. The dads are retired Trany guys and had lots of expierence.
Good Luck

HI
I asked the trany guys who rebuilt mine. They said their fathers built a cross piece that goes across the frame between the trany and rear end. They then jack the rear end back after loosening ( not removing the rearend hardware) and removing the bolts holding the shaft to the back of the trany. They jack it back until the spline drops out of the trany.
I guess it all depends if you are going to do it once or often whether it is worth building or rigging a temporary jacking arrangement.
