Removal of starter engine on 56 Buick

Hi there,

I feel a bit like an idiot asking this, but: How to remove the cranking motor on a 1956 Buick ?:clonk:
Problem is the upper bolt: I have tried 3 different tools from below and from above to access it and finally got a hold of it from above with one of them. But: There is practically no room to grip the tool, leave alone using enough force on it to break the bolt loose...

Am I missing something ? Is there a trick to it ? A special tool ? Or are Buick engines designed for complete removal from the car when the starter gives up ???

Removal of Starter on You '56

Hi Michael,

Long time.

You are correct there is absolutely no room to work with all the obstruction on the way.

The top bolt is especially difficult.

The way that the starter housing was made, you can't use a socket.

You have to use a wrench and you can only get a 1/4 of a turn at a time.

I think that you might be able to use a Crows foot or an curved obstruction wrench.

I believe that it is 5/8"

Use plenty of penetrating oil.

Once finally breaking the bolt loose I cut a wrench down to a size where I could get more swing room.

I think I drill a hole on the end of the cut down handle where I could put a Phillips head screw driver through or a piece of wire or cable through to be able to apply more leverage.

I think I broke the bolt coming from the top.

once broke I seems to me you then had more room for removal from the bottom.

You can get a total rebuilt kit from NAPA Online.
