I think that I already know the answer to this question (no), but I will ask it anyway. does anyone make a replacment fuel tank for my 50 Super?

Rebecca

I do not know about a replacement tank, but I have a guy that can repair your existing tank. He has done 3 for me for cars that I have restored. The cost is very high (500+), but the quality is great. Even if your tank is thin or holed, he can repair it to like new. Let me know if you are interested and I will post his company address.

thanks for the offer. I need to evaluate the condition of my tank first. In the next few weeks I should be able to drop the tank. I might be able to have it overhauled locally too.

Rebecca

Yeah, I just double-checked on Tanks, Inc...you want the B-1 Buick tank, for '50-'53 Buicks. That's the one I'm ordering for my special, and it should work for your super. Cost is $250.

wow. I can't belive that there is a tank available. There are no tanks available for my Desoto. I am definately going to order one right away. Thanks for the tip.

Does anyone make a new fuel tank sender?

Rebecca

snake-man, ya think that fuel tank will work with a 49? it looks like it would. it says it works with other 40-50's GM's. but since you seem to like that place, thought you might know.

I'd think it would. I guess the thing to do would be take the measurements off the '49 and match 'em with the one they have advertised. They also sell a tank for a '49 Chev, and GM loved interchanging parts, so a '49 Chevy tank is not that different from a '49 Buick tank. They also sell universal tanks if you want to go that route.

Tom you dog.... I was just about to ask about a tank for my 56' and there you are just going on about your $75.00 replacement. Was this a new tank or a parts tank?
Thanks,
Dale

'56 Tank

:waving: Hey Dale,

Sorry if my previous post was mis-understood!

The $75.00 Bucks, that I was referring to was for a Sending Unit

I refurbished my tank with a kit from POR-15.

It was a lot of work but it turned out "Splended"

Sorry for the confusion

:wavey: Hey Guys!

I did a Fuel Tank Restoration on my tank last year and I couldn't be more pleased with the finished product.

It turned out "Splendid" :bana:

I think that the problem your are experiencing is due to the tank not being completely clean and/ or bone dry.

It looks like you will have to start from scratch or call eastwood and see what their recomendations are.

I used the Por-15 Kit.

You can't rush this procedure. Take Your time. It can't all be done in one day!

I had a tank that had 3 gallons of old gas that was sitting in the tank for 33 years. (The car sat idle from 1970 to 2003) Who knows how much was original in the tank and how much evaporated by what was left was 3 1/2 gallons of coffee colored Varnish/Lacquor.

I cleaned the tank twice as instructed. The second rince the water was still discolored and the tank still smelled like gas.

I went and got a couple of those different size and shape wire brushes that attach to a drill along with some shaft extensions that set screw together.

I wire brushed the inside of the tank (through the 2" hole for the sending unit) the best I could (up down and all around).

I rinsed the thank again after the wire brushing and then repeated the cleaning Process again TWICE untill the rinse water was clean and the tank not longer smelled of gas.

The Cleaning solvent has to sit for a while to do it's job and every step of the process requires that you position the tank at different angles over entended periods of time.

I used a Wheel Barrow which aided me into getting position for the proper angles and coverage.

The Second step is the Metal Etching and you pretty much do the same thing letting the liquid cover and set over periods of time to get coverage.
I set mine at different angles for an hour or so.

ALSO: In between steps they say that the tank has to be dry, They mean Bone Dry like the Sahara! NO MOISTURE OR CONSENSATION!
Air Dry or use a Hair Dryer and let the Tank sit out in the direct hot sunlight for a few hours to bake it a bit and ride the tank of any moisture.

You can't rush a job if you expect it to last a lifetime.
Do it ONCE and Do it Right!

If You aren't crystal clear on anything I have explained. Feel free to Ask.

You Know where to find me.

Tom Gallagher

A tank from a 1980 Ford F-150 fits perfectly in my 55 Special. the sender is at the front of the tank at a 45 degree angle and the filler points to the drivers side.

Rebecca:

I've been told by a restoration company that it's best to get the old sending unit restored. I did this on my '50. Not sure why, accept that they claim the new units do not work accurately. The tank is my '50 was a mess and the gas gauge did not work at all. I did make the mistake of letting the resto experts redo my tank, and although it looks better than new, it cost a fortune. Also be sure to ground the sending unit to the frame. I can try to find out the name of the sending unit restorer if you'd like.
