The February 2015 issue of Chevy High Performance has a good article on using the phone. Basically, it amounts to holding the long side of your phone that doesn't have any buttons up against a part of the engine/trans, driveshaft and rear differential that is either vertical or horizontal and pressing a button three times. Everything else is calculated for you.
The design objective is to have approximately the same angle on the engine/trans that you do on the snout of the differential.
